Register a Nickname

Register your nickname

Registering your nickname will add a password to your nickname. Nobody will be able to use your nickname unless they know your password. Nickname registration is a good way to keep your nickname safe, and will make sure nobody impersonates you, or pretends to be you, when you aren't on the chat.

The CentralChat service called 'NickServ' handles nickname registrations. NickServ is a computer program on CentralChat. Whenever NickServ sees a user trying to use a registered nickname, that user will be asked for a password. If the user doesn't give the password to NickServ within sixty seconds, their nickname will be automatically changed to something else.

To register your nickname with NickServ, go on the chat and type this command (it doesn't matter where you type it):

/ns register password email

You will need to replace password with the password you want to use for your nickname, and email with your email address. Your email address will only be used if you forget your password; we promise not to use your email address for any other purpose.

NickServ should send a message back to you:

-NickServ- Nickname xander registered.
-NickServ- Your password is blahblah - remember this for later use.

Identifying with NickServ

Once you have registered with NickServ, you will need to identify for your nickname each time you connect to the chat. mIRC users can add the identify command to their perform list.

To identify, use this command:

/ns identify password

Remember to replace password with the password you registered with. If you don't provide NickServ with your password within sixty seconds, your nickname will be changed.

Removing someone who is using your nickname

If someone is using your nickname, you can make that person disconnect from the chat so that you are able to use your nickname.

To disconnect someone who is using your nickname, you will need to use the ghost command:

/ns ghost nickname password

Replace nickname with your registered nickname, and password with your nickname password.

Nickname 'stealing'

NickServ is not intended to be used for 'stealing' someone else's nickname. You should only register nicknames that you will use in the chat. If someone has stolen your nickname, post a message in the support section of the forums and a staff member will look into the matter. Registering a nickname does not mean you 'own' that nickname, and, if it has been found that you have 'stolen' another user's name, the registration of that name will be cancelled by a staff member.
